Daniel laid on his bed in the pitch black of night. He'd gotten to bed after midnight. The stove had broken and he'd stayed up pulling it apart and putting it back together again. So far, it was working. He guessed he'd see for sure when someone tried to use it again.
It was raining. No. It was storming like holy hell outside. Large angry raindrops threw themselves upon the roof and against Daniel's window, drumming a loud rhythm. He shut his eyes tight and drifted in an out of consciousness. Whenever he fell into a shallow sleep, a clap of thunder would resound in his eardrums and jolt him back awake again. "Shit," he muttered to himself and turned over. It was late...his muscles ached and he wanted so much to sleep. If only the weather would let him.

The storm had woke her up in the middle of the night and though she tried to go back to sleep it just wasn't working. So she slipped from her bed silently and headed out into the hall not wanting to wake her roommate. She wondered around the house quitely as she listened to the storm. She headed downstairs and with a load clap of thunder jumped letting loose a short scream that she quickly covered her mouth over. She wasn't 100% scared of the storm it was just the sudden noise that scared her. She liked things like this other wise...if she didn't she would have covered her head and stayed in bed. She hoped no one had heard her.

Re: storm « Reply #2 on: 05/04/2007 at 17:34:35 » Daniel had just drifted off to sleep when he was awakened by a yelp. At first he thought it had been in his dreams, just a product of his mind's unconscious wanderings. He closed his eyes again, but immediately felt compelled to go and investigate the source of the scream.
He forced himself upright and then, senses and motor skills dulled by fatigue, clumsily tugged on his pants and pulled a cap over his sleep tousseled hair. He plodded slowly over to the door and stuck his head outside to inspect the lobby. Squinting his eyes, he could make out a human form in the darkness. A woman's form. He knew he recognized her, but could not place who she was. "What are you doing up?" he said outloud, hoping her response would provide an answer to her identity.

Gin jumped at the sound of his voice. Goodness she was jumpy.
"I'm sorry..." she said softly stepping towards him

That telltale drawl - Gin. Daniel stepped out from behind his door, closing it softly behind him, but still leaving it a crack open. He rubbed his eyes as he stepped toward her. "It's no big deal," he said, with a yarn. "All this rain blowing about....how could anyone sleep?"

Well my roommate doesn't seem to be having any-" she was cut off by another clap of thunder than made her jump as she looked around as if she would see the cause.

Daniel watched her reaction with interest. Before he could speak, there was another flash of lightning. For a brief moment, it lit up the room with colorless light. Gin was awfully jumpy. Almost like once one thunderclap was gone, she became blissfully unaware that another one might be following after....and thereby, experienced each boom of it as though it were brand new.
He shrugged and gave her a small smile. His voice was easy and a little raspy from sleep as he said, "S'just thunder. Don't they have rain in Georgia?"

"A lot of it actually." she said laughing softly, "The sound just makes me jump" She looked at him with a bright smile amused with herself. Hopefully he didn't think her a silly girl.

Nodding, he slowly plodded over to the front counter and hoisted himself up onto it. He sat hunched over, still rubbing his brow. "So, Gin..." he said, voice still low and laden with tiredness. "How've you been? Haven't seen you in a few days. But I guess I've just been busy."

"You're so tired you sound utterly exhausted." she commented stepping closer to him just as another load boom sounded She jumped bumping against him her hand grabbing his leg before she could even begin to think over what she'd done. She looked around the room as she saw a bright flash of light again.

He definitely took note of her hand's quick touch of his leg. He didn't know why, but it felt more than accidental. Perhaps it was the late hour of the night that made everything feel vulnerable. Maybe it was just that he was so tied. Ha, maybe he was crazy.
He glanced at Gin, only his eyes moving upward, and then nonchalantly said, "Yeah, I am. I've been working like crazy on this place. Not getting any sleep doesn't exactly help that."

"And then you have the crazy lodger making a bunch of noise keeping you up. " she said apologetically, "Go on to bed...I shouldn't have come down here with my yelping."

Daniel shrugged, and just as he did, another clap of thunder sounded. "D'ya think I can sleep with that racket going on out there? 'Sides, my window doesn't shut all the way, so I can hear every sound magnified...rain, thunder, howling wind. I'm gonna wake up tomorrow and my floor is going to be a pool of rainwater....despite all the buckets and towels I've been using to prevent it. Haven't gotten around to fixing it yet. I've been so busy trying to fix every other thing in this place."

She jumped again though somehow contained the noise. "Is there really that much that's broken around here?" she asked

Daniel raised his eyebrows and looked at Gin. "Gin," he said to her, "Good luck finding something in good condition around here that I haven't just fixed. This place had its last heyday back in my grandfather's time. It hasn't really been touched since then. In fact, if you can find something that's not broken, I'll......I'll.....give you a prize or something."
