Hannah's eyes widened in surprise, and she bit back a laugh at his request, "Okay..." she replied, "A story or a joke, I can do that. Can't promise they'll be funny, but they might make you laugh out of pure cornyness, will that work?"

"Anything will do. As long as it's not 'Hey guy! The toilet's broken again!'. People around her don't even know what my name is, though I'm the person they see when they get here and the person that waves goodbye to them when they leave. I remember all of their names, and there's at least fifteen of you. I'm just one guy - how hard is one name, really? Oh!" he said suddenly, an idea occurring to him instantly. "How are you at adding? I really need to keep track of the books and I'm usually okay with doing it. But lately I've been so busy. I take money and scral it down in the books hurriedly, and then I run back upstairs to fix a squeaky door henge. I never get time to count it or subtract what we've spent."

"As long as it's merely adding and subtracting, I could help with that. Anything beyond that, I'm hopeless with. Just show me where the books are, and what you need me to do, and I'll do it. I get bored with too much free time, anyways, and I get off work fairly early, at 1:30. Of course, I go in at 5:30 in the morning, so you shouldn't think I'm not a hard worker." Hannah cut herself off, "Sorry. Babbling, yet another bad habit."

'It's easy. You could certainly do it. Like I said, I write down all the money I take in an' out in the ledger - the back of it. I just don't bother to balance it. The ledger's under the counter in the front. Every now and then, if you could go and tend to it, that'd be fantastic." He scratched his the back of his neck and then added, "And I don't care if you're babbling....at least you're talking to me." He gave her a wide grin and waggled his eyebrows.

Hannah laughed outright at that, "Fair enough." She replied, "I have to admit, I'm glad to have someone to talk to, myself. I've been living in the city all my life, and it seems more people look through you than at you."
"You know, you might make more friends, if you didn't snap at them when they offered their help. You're nice to talk to when you're not holding a hammer." Hannah's eyes twinkled, as she teased him, another trait she'd picked up from being a little sister. She only hoped he wouldn't take it the wrong way, and that he was used to it, as he had sisters of his own.

"I was having a bad day!" he yelled plaintatively. "Hell, give a fellow a break, madam!" He shook his head good humouredly. "Watch yourself or I'll be getting my hammer after you."

Hannah grinned good naturedly at him. "Too soon for jokes about it I see," she commented, glad to have someone to joke around with again. "And you can call me Hannah. Not madame, or Miss Brooks." She paused a moment, "Never 'Miss Brooks' " she added, with a slight shudder.
She fell silent for a moment, staring off into space. She shook her head, pulling herself back into reality, a grin easily finding her face again. "So, is there anywhere good around here to get something to eat? I mean, besides here? No offense intended, but the cook could use some help in the culinary department, if you know what I mean. Not that I could do any better, cooking was never my strong suit."

"Unless you'd care for bread and jam sandwiches, which is the extent of my cooking expertise, you could go to O'Malley's...they're pretty good. Or there's a little Italian place a few blocks from here. Bella Sera, I believe. Or could I interest you in a jar of pickles, which the Le Bistro d'Daniel is also serving?" he spoke animatedly, happy to have someone to converse with and almost completely forgetting about the drudgery of the day. Almost.

Hannah was still smiling as she responded, noting to herself that it was the most she'd smiled in quite a while, "You know, I wouldn't mind some bread and jam. The company makes up for the cuisine."

"Well said," was his response, as he rose to his feet, renewed with vigor. "Just need to fetch my hammer from the next room over....don't fret, I'm going to put it away, not bang on things, and we'll be off. Meet me in the kitchen in about a minute," he told her and then disappeared.

Hannah grinned at his retreating figure, "I'll see you there," she responded, even though she was pretty sure he was already out of ear shot. She stood, exiting the room, and pulling the door closed behind her as she made her way downstairs to the kitchen.
