"I know what you mean." Sheridan smiled, grateful that finally the conversation was taking a better turn. "I lived in Dublin until I was eleven, but I always preferred it to New York."

"Well, for one, we don't have the fuckin' English breathin' down our necks, right?" He gestured emphatically with the hand holding the cigarette. "Err," he glanced down at her, "sorry 'bout the language, but it's hard to avoid." Kill shifted from his spot on the edge of the roof so he could face her. "Brooklyn is really my home. If it was in Ireland, than I'd be the happiest man on earth. But it ain't, and I'm a bit wary of crossing the bridge these days, so here I am."

"Don't worry about the language," she assured him. "I've been known to toss out my share of swear words over the years." She laughed a little.

Dominic had been observing the scene between the two with nonchalant interest. He kept his eyes averted as they talked, but watched them in his peripheral vision. They were getting along famously....or somewhat so....it seemed, talking of their homeland. Dom almost wanted to chime in, would it not be completely off topic, being that he was the furthest thing from Irish his mind could conjure up. However, he found himself pulled back into the conversation when Sheridan mentioned swear words.
"Well, well," he said playfully, "Ain't that something. A mouth like a sailor, but lips too clean to touch a cigarette." He knew he'd probably catch hell from her again, but he simply couldn't resist. He glanced at Kill, and catching his eye, raised an eyebrow in jest.

Sheridan whipped her head around to face him, her hair hitting her in the face. "Now you're just trying to get on my nerves. Damn it, I'd just like to have a decent conversation with someone about something we have in common. Am I not even allowed to do that anymore?"

Dominic held his hands up in innocence and backed away from her. "Hey, no need to get so hot under the collar. I was just joking. By all means, have your decent conversation. You're certainly entitled to it. I'll just sit down here and shut my mouth." Dominic did as he said, backing away further and sitting down on the ground. He leaned back and propped himself against the brick of the ledge. From his pocket, he pulled his ocarina and toyed with it absentmindedly.

"You don't have to act like I'm going to push you off the side of the building," she muttered. "Though you've given me plenty of means to." She turned back to Kill. "Can you believe this? A compliment. One lousy compliment on his music started all this." She breathed a sigh of frustration and looked out over the city.

Kill was struggling hard against laughter, so much so that when he took another drag off the cigarette, he choked. He coughed once or twice, shaking his head. "Did you two know each other?" He gestured between the two of them, ash falling off the end of the oh-so-hated addiction. "Because you're bickering like a married couple."
He sent a look to Dominic, wondering at the young man's need to yank Sheridan's chain so fiercely. He looked sullen and Kill quirked an eyebrow at him, questioning it all with just a look. He was wondering if perhaps Dominic was in need of that job Kill had so jokingly offered him a few days earlier.

"Don't ever say something like that again." Sheridan turned to face Kill, anger beginning to flicker in her eyes. "I wouldn't want to be connected with him in any way except for the fact that we happen to live in the same place. But to answer your question: no, I never said one word to him, never gave him a nod of acknowledgement, to tell the truth, until just moments before you came up here." She sighed and hugged her knees to her chest, looking back down at the street.
She was quiet for a moment. "You know, if you want me to get off this roof and leave you alone, you can just ask me," she finally said, directing her comment to Dominic even though she didn't turn to face either of them. "You don't have to sit there and poke fun at me."

"Girl, you need to relax a bit," Kill raised an eyebrow at her, surprised, and a bit annoyed by her outburst. "I can't speak for Dominic here, but I never intended you harm." He crossed his arms over his chest, the good humor that softened his face fading some. He hadn't come up here to be snapped at. When he'd started any sort of conversation at all, Kill hadn't known he was going to be involving himself in something that appeared to be more than it was, although Sheridan claimed they'd never met before. He supposed they just rubbed each other the wrong way.

Sheridan sat quietly for a moment, contemplating. "I'm sorry," she finally said quietly. It seemed all she'd ever done in her life was apologize for one thing or another. She sighed and stood up. "Perhaps I should just be going. It seems like all I'm doing here is stirring up anger. It was nice to meet you," she said to Kill, then turned to face Dominic. "And, surprising as it might be, it was nice to meet you, too."

Dominic nodded her way, acknowledging her statement. He answered with "You too," and waited a moment. As she was about to go, he added, "But one thing...." His voice was sincere and so were his words as he said, "That's why they call it poking fun...emphasis on the word fun. If it were meant to be anything else, they'd call it something like 'inflicting pain'. Maybe it was wrong of me to even start something, not knowing you and not knowing how you'd take what I said - fun or no. So, don't you apologize - I'll apologize instead. So, sorry I gave you means to push me off the side of the building...sorry I make you revolt at the mention of being married to me. And..." He gave her a charming smile and then said, "Sorry you find it surprising to think it nice to meet me. You never have to speak to me again."
"Sooo.....you stay up here and finish your conversation and I'll be going." He gave both of them a slight smile and glanced downward quickly before he jumped off of the side of the building.

Kill rolled his eyes at the both of them, finishing off his cigarette. "Well this has all been wonderfully dramatic." He sank down next to Sheridan and ground embers into the roof top. "You don't have to leave. Maybe it's just a matter of starting over."
He extended his hand to her with a smile that was friendly enough, but held lingerings of the wry amusement she'd seen before. "I'm Kill Kilpatrick, I'm from Brooklyn and I'm pleased to meet you."

She studied him, occasionally flicking her eyes over to where Dominic had jumped off the building. She didn't know what had just happened. "I'm Sheridan from Manhattan, and it's nice to meet you," she finally said, shaking his hand.

"There we go." Kill started to reach into his pocket for another cigarette, but thought better of it. "That wasn't so hard, was it?" He leaned back, the rough surface of the roof digging into his palms. He enjoyed the sting, smiling at it. He dropped his head back to stare up at the sky, wishing it would clear. Long bouts of cloudy weather always put Kill in a sour mood.
"What do you do to pay your way, Sheridan from Manhattan? You must be working if you ended up here."
