Sheridan stood on the stairway, watching Daniel late one night as he worked, glancing from the ledger to another book to another book, then writing different things down on seperate sheets of paper.
Poor guy, she thought, trying her hardest to keep him from seeing her. Nearly twenty-five, and he spends all his time cooped up here. She'd never in all her seventeen years seen someone so involved with their work. And yet Daniel did it all and then some with a smile plastered on his face.
She heard footsteps behind her on the stairs, and didn't bother to turn around. She knew that the other lodgers were concerned with Daniel's constant time spent at the house. "Doesn't he ever go anywhere?" she whispered quietly, still watching him, concerned.

Anne-Marie had been on her way to work and passing through the lobby when she noticed the young girl hovering in the doorway. She caught the statement she had been murmuring to herself. It really wasn't Anne-Marie's place to answer, but she did anyhow. Slipping her shawl around her shoulders, she replied, "Not that I can tell." She nodded toward Daniel, who seemed still utterly absorbed in his work and unaware of the both of them. "I've been here two months and I don't think I've ever seen him leave."

Sheridan looked back at Anne-Marie. "Two months, and he's never left?" Incredulous, she turned back to watch Daniel work. "I've never seen anyone work so hard before in my life."

"Yes, but he does." She pulled the shawl more tightly around her and bent to adjust the strap of her shoe. "Too bad though. He's so young to be chained to a desk. Such a handsome face to never see the light of day." She made a slight "tsk" sound with her tongue and amended her statement. "But what can he do about? Poor thing probably doesn't even realize that he's wasting his life away."

Shaking her head, Sheridan pressed her hand against the wooden wall. Unfortunately, a splinter caught underneath her nail. "Damn!" she swore loudly, then clapped a hand against her mouth quickly. She was frightened Daniel would hear, and she didn't want him to chastise her for spying on him.
Was it really considered spying in the first place? She was just concerened about him.

"Hurt yourself, love?" Anne-Marie asked quietly, a touch of concern in her voice, and then a small laugh. "Maybe you should let Daniel see it. He's probably well versed in doctoring too...seeing as I've seen him do nearly everything else around here. Wonder why he's not married. Seems a guy like that would be quite a catch."

"Yeah, you'd think," Sheridan said distractedly. The splinter hurt, and she could see blood underneath her nail. Biting back tears of pain, she glanced down at Daniel, then back at the splinter. "Whatever it takes. God, this hurts!"

"Sure, go ahead," Anne-Marie said, giving her a gentle push out into the open and walking behind the girl as she went. "I'm off to work. See you later, love," she told Sheridan and then breezed passed her, nodding at Daniel as she went out the door.

Sheridan watched Anne-Marie leave, giving her a small wave with her injured hand, then turned to Daniel. She showed him the splinter. "Ran my hand over a rough spot in the wall," she explained.

Daniel looked up from his books and cringed at the sight of her fingers. "Looks unpleasant," he said. Holding his finger up as a signal for her to wait right there one moment, he disappeared back into his room. A moment later, he appeared with a small wooden box. Upon opening it, Sheridan was able to see that it contained various bits of medical supplies: bandages, gauze, tape, iodine, ointment, and the like. Just as Anne-Marie had said. Daniel worked quickly, producing a needle from the box, he dipped it into a vial of alcohol and reached out for Sheridan's hand. "Won't hurt much. Don't be afraid," he told her gently.

Sheridan nodded, trusting him completely. She felt another tear trickle down her cheek and inwardly cursed herself for being such a baby; she didn't have the highest tolerance for pain.

He noticed her tear and instantly felt sorry for her. He clicked his tongue and whispered, "Come now, don't cry. It'll be over in an instant." His touch on her hand was gentle, yet firm as he held it. As quickly as he could, he pricked her finger with the needle and fished out the bothersome snag of wood. "There!" he said as he finished. "We'll just clean up the blood and get you a bandage and you'll be good as new." He blotted her finger with a bit of gauze and then bandaged it up. "All done," he told her cheerily.

"Thanks," she responded, relieved. Ever since she was young, she hadn't had a very strong stomach when it came to blood. "So," she said, looking at him, smiling, "need help with anything? I have the day off from the troupe, so I don't have to be anywhere."

"Not at the moment...I think I've got it," he told her. "But if it all goes to hell, I'll be sure to let you know." He winked at her in jest. "Best go practice your carpentry skills.....you'll be needing them in this place."

She laughed. "Yeah, I've noticed. Well," she said, looking around, "it's actually not bad. I like living here. And I'm pretty sure no one else has too many complaints."
