Molly stood at the door to the dining hall and gazed about the room, satisfied but a bit wary. This, it appeared, would be much of her life from here on out. She hoped that she liked it.
Cooking couldn't be too difficult, she knew mothers and grandmothers that cooked for their large families three times a day, and on much less money than she would be allotted.
And besides, it wasn't like she was completely new to the chore. It's just that she had never derived that much pleasure from standing in front of a stove. Maybe that would change.
She wanted to peek into the kitchen again, but wasn't sure that she ought to. She hoped that Daniel was around so they could go out shopping and get some sort of idea about how to start this whole thing.

And just like magic, he appeared. It was lunchtime and he was in search of his usual meal. He'd been painting the trim up in the men's rooms upstairs all morning. He wanted to get them done before they needed to be used. The back of his hands were streaked with blue gray and there was even a smear across his cheek. "Oh, hello," he said to Molly, as he came upon the dining hall. "I'm heading in for some bread and jam....and maybe a pickle. You hungry? There's plenty to go around."

Molly turned and smiled at the man.
"Oh, sure," she said, and followed him into the kitchen. "I, ah, I was thinking that we could maybe go shopping... as you suggested earlier?" She rested her fingertips on a countertop and watched him as he prepared his lunch, trying to figure out what went where.

Daniel busily made his lunch, just as he had done each day. He knew the routine by heart and each moment was quick and in rhythm. The way in which he went out pulling out a skillet and toasting his bread, opening the jam jar, getting a plate and everything was almost musical.
"Sure, we can go shopping," he said as he plucked the bread from the stove and began to spread strawberry jam over its surface. "Not sure how much help I'll be. I'll just follow behind you, holding the basket full of things and whipping out my wallet to pay for everything." He dusted off his hands and carefully placed one slice of jammed bread on top of the other. Licking his thumb, he said, "You got something particular in mind for tonight?"

"Tonight?" Molly repeated, musing to herself, Well, I should probably begin simply. "Something easy... and able to feed a fair number," she said, starting to think out loud. "I guess fresh vegetables would never hurt. I'll make a soup. We'll buy some sweetbread, and then the basics - flour, sugar, some spices - we'll buy them now so I can use them later. Maybe a cake this weekend, or a fruit pie?"
She smiled. As she spoke her ideas, her apprehension began to turn to excitement. This could work out, this could work out perfectly. She may not be a stellar cook (not yet, anyway), but she did love to eat. She didn't fear running out of ideas.

Daniel nodded as he chewed. "Sounds like a plan," he said in between bites. "We should get going soon then. Let me finish this off, and then I can lock up for an hour or so and we'll head off. I think I've got a big basket or something around here for carrying stuff. I'll look for it. " He took another big bite, taking nearly half of his sandwich in his mouth. After he swallowed, he added, "So...soup. And bread and cakes and pies....wow. You're an angel, Molly. Don't ever leave."

She smiled again - grinned, really - and then kind of shrugged, for lack of knowing how else to respond to the compliment.
"Take your time," she said, "I'm just going to wait outside... get a little air." She smiled again and left.
