Levina was hungry. So hungry, in fact, that she forgot the gravity of her ineptitude in the kitchen. She got out a pan, a little cheese, and two slices of bread and heated up the stove. She put the bread and cheese together in the pan and placed it on the stove. While she waited for her sandwich to cook, she decided to read a few pages of Les Miserables, a book she'd borrowed from a friend. Javert was just about to throw himself into the river when she smelled smoke. She looked over and saw her little sandwich in flames. She dropped the book, grabbed the pan with her bare hands, and dropped it into the sink. As she released the pan, she felt the burns that she'd gotten from the hot metal handle and let out a string of colorful curses quite loudly. Scowling, she put her hands into the cool water to help sooth the burns.

"If you put some butter on that," a voice came from behind her, in the doorway, and when she looked, she saw Kill standing there, "it won't hurt so bad later on." He was smiling slightly, trying to hide his amusement at her misfortune, but not doing very well. He'd stepped into the kitchen just in time to hear her vivid language. That always brought a grin to his face.

Levina colored slightly. "Yeah. You're probably right, but the thing is, I don't actually know where almost anything is," she said, taking her hands out of the water. She grimaced as she picked up her book and marked her place. "I'm Levina, by the way. I'm new. Normally I'd offer you my hand to shake, but at the moment, it might be a little painful."

Boone leaned on the doorjamb, highly amused. He'd seen the pan in the sink, and the kitchen still smelled faintly of smoke, and there was Levina with very painful-looking burns on the palms of her hands. "Vina, I thought we established a very long time ago that you and cooking just do not mix. Oh, stop looking at me like that. You know it's true."

"Damn it!" Levina scowled hard at Boone. "I thought you were living in the Bronx! Stalker! First of all, my name is Levina, not Vina. Second of all, I am aware that my skills in the kitchen are a bit lacking. Can't I ever get rid of you, farm boy?"

Boone grinned and wrapped his arms around her waist from behind. "Now, Vina, why would you want to get rid of me?" he drawled, kissing her cheek.

Levina felt her skin crawl as he kissed her cheek. Then he whispered in her ear! His voice was like nails on a chalkboard to her, and she hated him with an intense passion. She struggled to get free from his hold, which only made him tighten his arms around her. "You pain-in-the-ass hick! Let go of me now!" She tried to elbow him in the ribs, but he just spun her around so that she was facing him. Her eyes flashed, and...Well, if looks could kill, let's just say that Boone would've been six feet under faster than he could say "harassment."

Kill watched all this with a mix of bemusement and disapproval. He'd been in the middle of stepping forward to introduce himself to the girl when this young man had popped out of nowhere. "These days it's hard to tell what's flirting and what's harassment, but that looks like the former to me."
He set Boone with an inquisitive look, gesturing to the door. "Do you find it that difficult to leave the girl alone, brother?"

Boone grinned and nodded. "I've lost my heart to a red-haired angel. Some day, she's going to realize how she really feels about me and be mine forever," he said wistfully, loosening his grip on her.

Levina finally broke free from his arms and slugged him in the nose with all her might. "When hell freezes over!" She bit her lip when she unclenched her hand to keep the tears that were pricking her eyes from spilling over. She really had a very low pain tolerance, and she'd just about pushed it to the limit. turning to the Irish guy and pointedly ignoring Boone, she said, "I'm sorry. I didn't catch your name."

"Kill," he said, still watching her admirer carefully. He stepped forward, extending his hand to her. "I've been here a few weeks, but your the first one I've seen in the kitchen." For all he knew, Boone's attentions could have been completely playful, if not innocent, but he could see the wetness in the girl's eyes and it made his lip curl a little. Kill might have questionable morals, but not when it came to hurting women. It reminded him too much of his father.

Levina raised an eyebrow. "Kill? That's really your name? I suppose that I don't have any room to talk, though. When I used to sell papes, I was called Spotlight," she said, making a face. "I honestly don't know why the newsies can't go by their real names. Some of 'em I understand, 'cause they're trying to hide from the coppers, but I swear the other ones do it just for the sake of having a stupid nickname!"

"They don't all choose their names, you know. I never would've chosen to be called Boondock," Boone said, grimacing. "I really am sorry, Vina. I was just pokin' fun. Forgive me?"

Levina crossed her arms over her chest. "No. If you were really sorry, you'd find some other girl to torment." Her eyes lit up and she grinned slyly. "Speaking of which, a friend of mine was looking for a date the Friday night. Interested?"

Boone looked worried. "I don't like the look in your eye. Have I seen her before?"
