Anne-Marie smiled. "Well, you're a strange one. Most men I know would rather have a woman shut her mouth and bat their eyes and smile at them." She paused and took a deep breath. "But I think I've gone on enough. I'm rambling about all of these things I think but never tell anyone, and I don't know anything about you. I don't even know your name."

"Well how rude of me. My name's Nathan Calmore." he said with a smile, "And you."

If she were at work, she would have responded with a polite, "A lady doesn't tell such things to a stranger." But she had already gone on and on. If he were going to stalk and kill her, he probably had enough information to do that. What could a name hurt? "Anne-Marie," she responded. She had worked so hard to Americanize her voice and had become quite good at it. Yet, whenever she said her name, her accent shone through like she'd never spent a single hour out of her native country.

Nathan smiled at her accent though he didn't comment on it. "A right pretty name...a perfect fit for a girl like you." he stated "I hope you wont be late for work...when do you start?" he asked not wanting to be the blame of her loss of job

"Soon enough. Guess I should be going," she said, and started to back away. "It was nice to meet you, Nathan," she added, before turning to go. Pity she'd probably never see him again, she thought. He was nice and friendly. She didn't know very many people who she could consider nice. Especially no one she could talk to.

"Would you like some company on your way?" he asked as he watched her start to head away from him.

Anne-Marie stopped in her tracks and turned on her heel. "But I thought you were going to go swimming in the filth. What happened to that? Don't let me stand in your way...."

"You're hardly standing in my way...it'll still be here 10 minutes from now, or however long it takes me to walk there and back." he stated, "I still stick by the fact that you shouldn't be walking there alone."

Anne-Marie put her hands on her hips and cocked her head to the side. "Well, if it isn't my own knight in shining armor," she said. "Look, I want you to know up front that I don't need anyone walking me anywhere. But you can come along, as long as it's just to prevent you from dying a horrible death from river infection or to not be bored or something. But you'd better hurry up. I hate being late."

"Yes ma'am" he teased before catching up to her

Anne-Marie hoped he wouldn't make her take his arm or anything like that. She was all for politeness and men being gentlemen, but with strangers, that sort of gentility seemed awkward. So, she walked quickly, taking long strides and keeping her arms folded across her chest.

"I wont touch you and transfer my couties, I promise." he laughed as he caught up to her easily his hands going in his pockets as they walked.

"Who said anything about cooties? I'm just trying to get to work on time. Won't do me any good to show up late. This is only my fourth day on the job. I'm sure I'm still being watched and scrutinized every second. It's not like I have any friends looking out for me either." She kept up her quick step as she talked. Her stomach tied itself in knots at the thought of being late and losing the job. Although not luxurious by any means, it was still the best job she'd had in months. "We've got a long way to go. It's not exactly close to here."

"Should we run? What would you like to do?" he asked

"Ha!" Anne-Marie scoffed. "That would be really ladylike, me running down the street. If my mother could see me now! No...there's no need to run. No need to dawdle either, but definitely no need to run. Just warning you that it's quite a walk. You can turn back now if you want. It won't hurt my feelings or anything."
