"I have nothing else to do" he assured As they walked he heard someone fall into step behind him. Nathan didn't turn around or make any motions that would allude to the fact that he heard it but he listened carefully.

Anne-Marie had not heard what Nathan had. She walked along briskly, but when she looked to her right to glance at her companion she slowed her pace. Brows furrowing, she asked him, "Is something wrong?"

He grabbed hold of her arm trying to keep her at her brisk pace. "No...how late do you work tonight?" he asked trying to keep a sense of normality in case the person following them was actually following and not jsut going in the same direction.

She felt slightly odd before, but once he grabbed her arm, she felt very much out of sorts. Her voice was low, almost a whisper, when she answered, "The club closes at two. Just like every other bar in the city.....now, really, what's wrong with you? And don't tell me nothing. I'm not stupid. I can see it in your face. Your expression changed."

Suddenly thje steps got closer really fast...almost too fast for Nathan to react. He felt Anna Marie's arm yanked from his as their persuer tried to detach them. "A pretty little thing like you shouldn't be kept to just one guy" Nathan threw a punch immediately though it didn't hit the target directly without having a visual first.

Anne-Marie felt the tight grip on her arm bruising her flesh. Everything happened so fast, she didn't really have a chance to experience it fully. Her arm was grabbed, then there the sound of a fist hitting skin, and her arm was released. She backpedaled from the recoil, running into a lightpost, hooking her foot into her skirt and toppling down onto the sidewalk. There she sat, a mangled, bruised wreck. "How graceful," she thought quickly, glancing down at herself. She brushed the hair out of her eyes and surveyed the scene around her. Nathan and some other man she did not know or want to know were having it out.
"Great," she thought with a sigh. "This is why you aren't supposed to talk to strangers. This should be a textbook illustration of what exactly can result."

Nathan had a busted lip at this point but he wasn't the kind to just lay down and take it. He threw as much as he could hoping more to just get the guy scared enough to walk away. He wasn't really expecting much else. He threw another punch straight to his nose feeling the warm liquid of the other man's blood cover his hand

Anne-Marie surveyed the scene before her. Her mouth hung slightly ajar at the realism of the violence before her. She watched Nathan take a swing at the stranger's face, then felt a spray of warm blood stain her arm and her skirt. She looked down at it mortified. How could she go to work like this? She looked up at the men, and then down at herself and prayed to God to make it all stop. But how could she stop it. "Oh boys..." she said, softly and almost sarcastically to herself. "I wonder if you'd mind stopping beating each other's faces in? You see, I'm going to be late for work and you know how embarrassing that is....."

"Anne go." Nathan commanded as he grabbed hold of the guys shirt pulling him in the opposite direction.

She looked startled....her mouth forming an "o" and her eyes questioningly fixed on Nathan. She wanted to ask him if he was sure....being in the present state he was in....but fear crept in. He was right. The best thing for her to do was just run away. So, she stood...gathering up her skirts, she took off as fast as she could in the direction of her work.

Nathan kept him busy as long as he could until he realized that she was well gone. He gave the man one last punch before turning and running after Anne Marie. His hand and ribs were throbbing and his lip was bleeding but he was in one piece.

Anne-Marie had run as far and as fast as her legs could carry her. When she grew tired, she walked, breathing hard and heavy to catch her breath. She soon arrived at the City Gardens, and sat on the front stoop to rest.

Nathan made his way to her work more to check on her than anything else. When he finally saw the building he noticed her sitting on the steps. "You...you alright?" he asked

"Me?" Anne-Marie stood up and looked at him incredulously. "Look at yourself! You're bleeding!" Her hand went to her forehead and she shook her head. "What is this? Who are you?" She began to pace around in a circle. "What kind of things do I get myself into? I know better. I know not to talk to strange men I meet....at the docks nonetheless. And look! I get involved in a street fight." She stopped and turned to face him. "I'm fine. But...I....I...I have to go." Then, she turned on her heel. Up the steps and into the building she went without another word, cursing herself for being so stupid the whole way.
